TOPICS: ARMENIAN GENOCIDE in Spring 2025 (HI3091B)

The centennial of the Armenian genocide, in 2015, was an event of global significance. Until the end of the twentieth century, the destruction of Ottoman Armenians during World War I had hardly featured in public memory. Even today, Its memorialization still faces a deep state-sponsored denial in Turkey and remains a battlefield in international politics. This class will introduce students to the history of the Armenian genocide in comparative and multidisciplinary perspectives. It will also aim to deepen students’ understanding of social and political uses of the past, through the case study of the Armenian genocide and its conflicting memories.
