The senior seminar involves an in-depth study of major artists, epochs or themes in art history. The course regularly changes focus and approach according to the specialty of the professor. It will, however, always include a historiographic component and may cut across traditional, chronological, and/or geographical boundaries. May be taken a second time as an upper-level art history elective.

“Aesthetic autonomy” writes Hal Foster, is “the notion that culture is a sphere apart, with each art distinct ... We tend to forget that autonomy is always provisional, always defined diacritically and situated politically, always semi. …” The seminar will investigates the relationships between arts and the mass media, with a particular focus on the 1960s. Rather than relying on practical distinctions between high and low, fine arts and applied arts, serious experiment versus entertaining commercial product, the class will consider the intersections and links between the most advanced artistic endeavors of the time and the aesthetics of the commercial and corporate environment.

Learning Outcomes

In addition, students will engage with secondary texts in art history in order to refine their critical evaluation of such scholarship and gain an awareness of the methodologies of the field
Students will become familiar with important artistic and cultural trends of the period
Ultimately, as a senior capstone, this course aims to equip students with the skills necessary to formulate complex theses that address both formal artistic concerns and historical circumstances
We will examine a range of primary sources, both visual and textual, and learn to understand the different ways in which these sources communicated through style, language, and structure. Close visual observation will inform written formal analysis
Students will apply knowledge and skills acquired through both the core curriculum and their major requirements to a disciplinary or interdisciplinary, cumulative, or project-based experience to express their growth and the totality of their learning while at AUP (CCC LO1)
Students will engage in the self-assessment, reflection and analysis of this process that prepares them for future success and be able to articulate this to future educational and professional interlocutors (CCC LO2)
