We will explore how to understand environmental systems from data science angles. The course encourages students to think critically and reason quantitatively about an environmental problem rather than just focusing on getting a specific answer. This course will have hands-on practical work with real data, R or Python, and statistical or machine learning software packages.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will be able to read, understand quantitative research papers in various environmental disciplines, and re-produce or re-assess the quantitative analysis in the reports.
  2. Students will be able to undertake data analysis, and report on it - including be able to interpret, report and synthesize data and present it in various formats visually. (CCD LO3)
  3. Students will be able to use at least one programming tool - being able to formulate appropriate problems in a way that allows a computer to help solve them; you will have familiarity with automating these solutions through the implementation of algorithms, codes or softwares. (CCD LO4)
  4. Students will be able to engage in the writing practices and culture of your chosen major, adding to the skills you acquired in the Research, Interpretation, and Writing classes to develop a personal, authentic disciplinary voice. (CCR)
