Considers a selection of Shakespeare's plays in the context of the dramatist's explorations of the possibilities of theatricality. Examines how theater is represented in his work and how his work lends itself to production in theater and film today. Students view video versions, visit Paris theaters, and travel to London and Stratford-on-Avon to see the Royal Shakespeare Company in performance.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will have absorbed the texts of several Shakespeare.
  2. Students will have learned the significance of the different genres of Shakespeare's plays, among which: tragedies comedies, histories and romances, as well as problem-plays.
  3. Students will have developed a comprehension of Shakespeare's world and the art of his period.
  4. Students will have learned to relate Shakespeare to contemporary concerns, such as with power, gender, geographical and cultural "otherness", colonialism, war, fanaticism, evil, forgiveness and reconciliation.
  5. Students will haveBegun to grasp something of Shakespeare's development as a dramatist, through his constant self-revision and self-criticism.
  6. Students will have Viewed as many of Shakespeare's plays as possible in performance (on screen, live productions and in recordings of productions).
