Reads Joyce's Ulysses in depth, and within modern history and modernist culture. Considers contemporary contexts and the theoretical corpus to which the novel has given rise. Explore relationships between artistic creativity and the imagination of new political and social possibilities.
Taking Joyce's novel as a model, students build intellectual and creative responses to the difficulties and opportunities of late capitalism.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will demonstrate an understanding of how experimental prose relates to historical challenges.
  2. Students will understand how different modes of theorisation (historicism, cultural materialism, genetic criticism, deconstruction, psychoanalytic approaches) have been applied to Joyce's Ulysses, and have emerged from readings of the text.
  3. Through creative experiment, students will reflect on the relation between creative experiment and their own historical and spatial contexts.
