This course lays the groundwork for an advanced understanding of the international and regional human rights frameworks, both hard and soft law, that guarantee dignity for individuals and populations worldwide. International human rights law establishes the norms, jurisprudence and legal infrastructure necessary to promote the implementation of international human rights standards.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will demonstrate an advanced understanding of international human rights law with respect to data management and protection 
  2. Students will be able to show familiarity with the specific treaties that make up the body of international human rights law, including guarantees of privacy and security with respect to the use of personal data 
  3. Students will be able to present succinct, well-organized oral arguments at a level appropriate for presentation at international and European human rights venues  
  4. Students will produce reflective, well-structured written work (with citations from assigned reading and other peer-reviewed sources) of a level appropriate for submission of human rights complaints to UN Treaty Body Committees and other bodies
