DESIGNING YOUR EDGE (GPP5001)

Please note that this workshop is exclusively for AUP Master’s students.
Graduate students face special challenges as they prepare for their professional lives. They are either building on existing skills and going deeper by continuing their studies in a specific area or broadening their knowledge by branching out to a discipline that is different from their undergraduate degree. Many graduate students are going through a career pivot and some have substantial work experience in another field. Meanwhile, even if they come into their programs with a clear sense of what they want to springboard into—and that is not the case for everyone—their programs are so rich with new possibility that it may feel overwhelming to try to identify potential target careers. Graduate degrees are short and intense, spanning from 18 months to 2 years, and that does not leave students with a lot of time to reflect on the changes they are undergoing and to position themselves accordingly.
Enter Design Thinking. It began as a tool used by engineers, but it is now recognized as a useful method for tackling all sorts of problems. The “problem” addressed in this workshop is: What are my short-and long-term post-graduation objectives, and what skill and/or experience gaps do I need to address while at AUP to achieve them?
The Designing Your Edge (DYE) workshop for Master’s students is designed to help students get their bearings during the first months at AUP. They will reflect critically upon their previous professional, academic, and personal experiences. They will think concretely about their post-graduation aspirations. And they will identify the most strategic ways to invest their time in curricular and co-curricular experiences at AUP to achieve their short and long-term goals.

DESIGNING YOUR PITCH (GPP5003)

Please note that this workshop is exclusively for AUP Master’s students.
Professionals use strong personal pitches as the foundation for strong applications and interviews. The process of developing a strong personal pitch demands that students think critically about what exactly they bring to the table. This process ultimately empowers them with a clear vision of who they are and the ability to sell that vision. This Designing Your Pitch workshop is available exclusively for current graduate students at AUP.
During the course of the Designing Your Pitch (DYP) workshop, students will articulate a clear and specific short-term objective, they will learn some easy and effective techniques to identify their most relevant experience and to present those experiences with compelling ease, and they will develop and get feedback on a personal pitch. Students who participate in this workshop will be invited to present at the Graduate Pitch Soiree (held periodically), where their peers, faculty and staff will come to offer support and feedback. The DYP workshop and Graduate Pitch Soiree gives students the confidence and tools needed to be successful in their post-AUP lives.

Topics for these intensive, practical modules change every semester. May be taken twice for credit.

NGO FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT (GR5024)

NGO & MISSION-BASED MANAGEMENT (GR5055)

This course takes an interdisciplinary and comparative approached to NGO and mission-based management based on the assumption that management principles, though universal to some extent, vary significantly according to the context in which NGOs function. This course requires students to think strategically and critically in the management of NGO’s within the political, economic, ideological, and socio-cultural contexts in which they operate.

SUSTAINABILITY MANAGEMENT (GR5061)

This is a “big .picture” comprehensive course covering sustainability management topics. It cuts across the whole spectrum of business and management with a focus on sustainability (economic, social, ethical and ecological returns). Climate Change, the greatest unmet challenge facing contemporary managers and organizations, is a particular focus. We will look at sustainability issues presenting “wicked” and untamed (complex) contexts for managers and evaluate how current theories and practices perform and fail to perform in these contexts. May be taken twice for credit.
