Media Practicum: Reporting Conflict is as close to a real-life newsroom experience as most students will come during their time at university. This course prepares students to play the role of journalists covering an international crisis. A weekly class will teach you the multimedia skills and the journalistic skills (press briefings, reporting, broadcasting and social media) needed to cover a simulation of military intervention organized and operated by the French War College (Ecole de Guerre) with civilian partners.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will demonstrate the ability to work in a real-time newsroom context as part of a team and under time pressure.
  2. Students will show the ability to contribute to the news output of a media team via strong skills in one or more media (text, photo, video, social media) or newsroom functions (chief editor, newsroom manager).
  3. Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of a fictional, but realistic, news scenario and its implication for choices in reporting.
  4. Students will enhance their understanding of the complexities and challenges of real-world concerns and their creative capacity to address them. (CCX LO1)
  5. Students will engage in the self-assessment, reflection and analysis of this experience, preparing them for future success, and will be able to articulate this to future educational and professional interlocutors. (CCX LO3)
