Introduces the processes and analytical tools necessary for investment decision-making. Provides the basic skills, modes of analysis and institutional background useful to work in the investment area of finance firms or as an individual investor. Students who successfully complete the course are expected to be able to work in the field or to continue their specialization in Security Analysis or Portfolio Management.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Be familiar with many areas of investment analysis both from a theoretical and practical side.
  2. Compare and contrast different investment management approaches (e.g., passive vs. active)
  3. Describe the general structure of various financial markets
  4. Use financial derivatives as hedging instruments and speculative instruments
  5. Value financial products such as common stocks (both undervalued and overvalued) and fixed-income securities
  6. Students will be able to engage in the writing practices and culture of their chosen major, adding to the skills acquired in the Research, Interpretation, and Writing classes to develop a personal, authentic disciplinary voice (CCR)
