The course offers a joint introduction to architectural conservation and urban design in Paris. It looks at how historical buildings find their place in a changing city. The course will examine some of the key ideas which have shaped conservation philosophy in France, from the restoration of historical monuments to conservation at the urban scale, the relation between monuments and their context, the redesign of public spaces, the quiet neighborhood movement. Student will visit historical landmarks and their surroundings, examples of contemporary architecture in historical spaces, and commercial and community-based interventions of adaptive reuse throughout Paris.
